Debby Hackbarth
Debby holds two separate master’s degrees: Curriculum/Instruction: Literacy and Special Education: Learning Disabilities. She has served the field of education as a teacher in general and special education, an administrator, and a staff developer. In IL and WA, she was on staff at Northern Illinois University, Kishwaukee College, and Seattle Pacific University. For over fifty years, she has mentored students of all ages in several disciplines as a professional tutor.
Intellect Publishing published her four books for young readers: Glisten, the Fairhope Dragon series They also published her memoir: Dynamic Debby: Overcoming Prematurity and Poor Vision which won an International Impact Book Award in 2025. Finally, Intellect just published her anthology of poems that parallel her memoir: Soul Stories: Poetry From the Heart.
Clarendon House Publications have published her poetry in their Poetica anthologies and have published her short stories in their Galaxy anthologies. Her work also appears in Turtle Island Poetry, published by Four Feathers Press. Online, the following organizations have published her work: The Writers Club, Four Feathers Press, Christian Magazine, World Spoken Word & Poetry, and Spillwords Press.
For two years, she served as Secretary for the Pensters Writing Group, one of the oldest writing groups in Alabama. She has won awards for her prose and poetry in their monthly contests. Debby’s artwork has been sold throughout Baldwin County, AL and her illustrations are throughout her publications. She has given motivational speeches in Fairhope, AL.
