When Mike Turner finished a nearly 30-year law enforcement career, he planned a retirement on the U.S. Gulf Coast filled with recreational sailing and travel. But an adult education course in beginners’ ukulele started Mike down the path of songwriting and performing.
Now, close to 15 years later, he’s won awards for his songwriting, including being named Male Gospel Entertainer of the Year by both the Alabama Music Association and the North America Country Music Associations International; been a featured performer of original folk music at the Monroeville Literary Festival; and had his lyrics, “Sense of Peace,” awarded the 2023 Roger Williams Peace Prize.
Much of Mike’s writing is in folk music’s “protest songs” traditions on social topics. In 2020 he teamed up with U.S. songwriter and producer Taylor Sappe to found Music For World Peace Records, to give songwriters and recording artists across the globe a platform to produce and distribute songs that oppose war and advocate peace. Mike became the label’s first CEO, along with songwriting, A&R and ultimately recording responsibilities.
Mike stepped down as the label’s CEO in 2022, but continues to work with MFWPR as a sponsor, songwriter and recording artist. In all, he’s had a hand in over a dozen of the label’s 65+ releases over the past four years - some as writer/co-writer, with releases by multiple label artists; some as recording artist; and even a few as designer of cover art for releases.
Mike writes primarily in folk, folk-rock, blues, classic rock and country genres. His songs are typically infused with rock, jazz, blues and gospel influences. Mike’s recordings have received radio airplay in the US, UK, Ireland, Europe and on the US Armed Forces Radio Network.
Mike is also an accomplished poet, with more than 350 poems published in over 75 literary journals and anthologies. His debut poetry collection, Visions and Memories, is available on Amazon. Mike’s on the board of directors of the Alabama Writers Cooperative and is a member of the Alabama State Poetry Society.
